Lib Dems: youth centre for Plymstock 'long overdue', eight years after Morley Youth Centre closure
Plymstock needs a youth centre for local young people after the old youth centre was closed eight years ago, says Steve Guy, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Plymstock Dunstone in the upcoming council elections.
Morley Youth Centre was closed in 2018, and new homes have now been built on the old site. No new, replacement youth centre has been identified.
Steve said: "I fully support calls from local people who want improved services for young people here in Plymstock. That is something that is coming across loud and clear on the doorstep when I speak to residents. A new youth centre to replace the one that Plymstock lost in 2018 is long overdue. It could act as a hub and home for a range of youth services and as a venue that could host local youth groups and events.
"I grew up here in Plymstock and a youth club I was a member of used to meet at the old youth centre. So, I really do get it when people speak about just how important it is to have facilities like a youth centre in our community. It is vital that we support young people and ensure there are facilities for them."
Commenting on the fact that the Morley Youth Centre, which was closed almost a decade ago, is still listed on Plymouth City Council's website, Steve added: "It doesn't exactly fill me with confidence that this is something the Labour-run council pays much attention to when, according to the council's own website, Morley Youth Centre is still up and running. There are even road signs still pointing to it!
"It's beyond time that the Labour-controlled council focused on delivering for Plymstock."
Liberal Democrat candidates are contesting seats right across the city in the upcoming elections, and better services for young people is something those elected as Lib Dem councillors on 7 May will champion when they take up their seats on the council.
