It has been a disappointing General Election outcome nationally. However, it was a privilege supporting Sarah Wollaston's campaign in Totnes. It is a huge shame that such a brilliant and principled MP was not re-elected as a Liberal Democrat. It was also a disappointing result for Danny Chambers in North Cornwall.
However, there are some glimmers of hope. Some new Liberal Democrat MPs have been elected. Our vote share has increased nationally, despite us losing seats. In the two Plymouth seats where we campaigned, Sima Davarian and Sarah Martin both increased the Liberal Democrat vote share - in South West Devon, and Plymouth Moor View, respectively. In fact, our share of votes across Plymouth as a whole increased.
We have a huge fight ahead of us, challenging Johnson and the Tories. There will no doubt be lessons learned, but we cannot stop standing up for liberalism, decency and a progressive society.
