Hugh Janes, the chair of Plymouth Liberal Democrats, has pointed to the Liberal victory in Canada's general election as evidence of how liberal parties can bounce back after election disappointments. At the election, held on 19th October, Canada's Liberals jumped from the 34 seats they won in 2011 to win 184 this time. At the previous election the Liberals had seen their seat tally more than halve.

"Canada's Liberals saw their number of MPs jump sevenfold at this election," said Hugh Janes, the chair of Plymouth Liberal Democrats. "That's a brilliant result for our liberal sister party, and it also shows how liberal parties can win - and win big. After our bruising result back in May this result fills me with confidence that if we work hard then the Liberal Democrats can surge back at the next election."

He continued, "I wish Canada's new Liberal Government well, and I am going to use their example to drive our campaigning over the coming months and years."
