Litter bin needed to tackle Bretonside rubbish and smashed glass hotspot

Local Liberal Democrats are calling for a new litter bin at the bus stop near the Leonardo Hotel, to tackle the build-up of rubbish on the nearby steps leading down to Moon Street.

Residents have raised the issue with local Liberal Democrat and Barbican resident Hugh Janes, reporting that the steps, which connect Exeter Street to Moon Street and are a popular cut-through to the Barbican, are regularly strewn with smashed glass from abandoned beer bottles, discarded fast food containers, coffee cups and empty drinks bottles.

Hugh Janes said: "The council should have identified this as a priority long ago, both by installing a bin next to the bus stop at the top of the steps and ensuring the area gets regular attention from street cleaners.

"People living in Bretonside and other areas near the city centre deserve clean, safe streets like everyone else.  Right now, that isn't happening.

"There's already a bin on the bus stop on the opposite side of the road so it's not a big ask to have one on the south side too. A bin won't solve the problem entirely, but it may well make a real difference.”

Liberal Democrats are committed to cleaner, safer streets across Plymouth and will continue to push the council to act on issues like this one.

A formal request for a new bin at that site has been submitted to the council.
