After Labour-run Plymouth City Council’s sale of Pounds House and its gardens last October, the local Liberal Democrats are now going into this year’s council elections pledging to fight any further attempts by Labour to sell off more chunks of Central Park.

The sale of over an acre of Central Park for £500,000 six months ago came despite Labour having made multiple commitments to save Pounds House, which had been in public hands for almost a century.

Commenting, Lib Dem candidate for Peverell, Stuart Bonar, said: “It was really shameful of Labour here in Plymouth to win the votes of local people, particularly in Peverell, by telling them how they would save Pounds House, before selling it off at auction last year. People voted for them in good faith, and had that trust betrayed.

“Central Park is a jewel in the city’s crown. It gives our great city its beautiful green heart. We must defend it, and every Liberal Democrat councillor elected this year will do just that. We will watch like hawks and fight tooth and nail any attempt to sell off even more of our park, or any park in the city.

“Our parks must remain in our hands.

“Plymouth Lib Dems want a clean, green city, so defending our parks, allotments and other green spaces is central to what we stand for.”

Elections to Plymouth City Council will take place on Thursday 7 May.
