Action needed on Plymouth potholes, say Lib Dems

Plymouth Liberal Democrats are calling for more action from the Labour-run council on the potholes that plague those driving, cycling or walking around the city.

Richard Bray, Liberal Democrat candidate for Compton ward in the city council elections on 7 May, said: "Out campaigning at the weekend, I came across this whopping pothole on Mannamead Avenue. A few steps away was another pothole, also so big that it was filled with rainwater.

"This could do real, costly damage to a vehicle or even seriously injure a driver, motorcyclist or cyclist.

"We've reported it, so I hope to see it fixed soon, but we need to see more proactive action from the Labour-run council to stay on top of this and to get ahead of it.

"We've seen £7.5 million spent on a wiggly pavement for new bus stops on Royal Parade, you'd think they could fund more action on fixing the potholes that we find everywhere on our roads here in Plymouth.

"Here in Compton, where I live, we've also seen a fixed pothole right next to a pothole that needs to be fixed. We have seen this in places like Plymstock too. Lib Dem-run Devon County Council has trialled a system where the teams fixing potholes are empowered to fix other potholes they could see at the same time, while they are there and have the equipment. That is common sense, and an example of the competent way in which Liberal Democrats run councils."

For Plymouth Liberal Democrats, fixing the city's roads for all road users -- drivers, cyclists and pedestrians -- and making our streets safer and cleaner are top priorities.
